Happy Halloween! 🎃 I attended Truist Bank's Economic Outlook talk this week (thanks, John & Tyler) bracing for bad news, but came away cautiously optimistic. Their economist presented compelling data showing we're not in a recession. Employment remains robust and consumer spending continues to grow. While inflation has ticked upward, it's far less alarming than current headlines might suggest.

🏙️ What Milwaukee Taught Us About Homelessness
Lessons from this year’s GLIDE trip that could reshape Louisville’s approach
👥 Setting the Scene: During this year’s GLIDE trip to Milwaukee, 130 Louisville business leaders saw firsthand how another city tackled complex problems like homelessness through collaboration and clear strategy.
🏡 Milwaukee’s Results: Milwaukee reduced homelessness by 80% in a decade by uniting businesses, housing agencies, nonprofits, and law enforcement around one shared goal of getting people housed and keeping them there.
🧩 How the Model Works: Their Housing First model provides permanent housing with voluntary services while police, health systems, and employers work together to reduce citations, emergency room visits, and street-level issues.
💵 The Economics: It costs about $12,000 to $13,000 a year to house one person in Milwaukee’s program, which is far less than the $20,000 or more cities spend annually when people remain unhoused. After housing just 85 people for a year, Milwaukee saw more than $700,000 in public savings, including a 95% drop in citations and major reductions in emergency room visits and detox stays. The investment pays for itself within a year while creating safer, cleaner streets that help residents and local businesses thrive.
📈 Measurable Outcomes: With a 95% to 98% housing retention rate, fewer encampments, and cleaner, safer downtown areas, Milwaukee’s data proves that permanent housing and collaboration work better than enforcement.
💼 Why It Matters for Business: When homelessness declines, businesses benefit directly. Customers feel safer, tourism improves, and Louisville’s image becomes more attractive to new talent, investors, and companies considering expansion.
⚡️ Spark Take: Louisville can learn from this model by bringing businesses, city leaders, and nonprofits together to invest in housing solutions that strengthen both the local economy and community well-being.

💚 Raising Spirits (& Funds) for Green Hill Therapy

One of my favorite things to do is host events that mix good people with a good cause. This time, we gathered at The Royal Room to raise money for Green Hill Therapy, a small Louisville nonprofit helping kids through horseback and aquatic therapy.
We had more than 30 people show up and raised over $4,800 to support their programs. During the night, we heard from two parents whose children have directly benefited from Green Hill’s services. Their stories made it clear how much progress and confidence this kind of therapy brings to families across our city.
“We are thrilled with the outcome and the connections we made. It means so much to a small organization like Green Hill. Thank you for this opportunity. Between the Royal Room and this unique event concept, you have created something very special.”
If you’ve never seen what they do, Green Hill helps children build strength, coordination, and confidence through hippotherapy (therapy on horseback) and aquatherapy (therapy in water). It’s joyful, hands-on work that truly changes lives. To help support this great cause, please consider donating here.
